Maintenance Department

Maintenance Worker

There is an immediate opening on our Maintenance team. The hourly rate is based on experience, and benefits are available after probationary period. This position oversees the maintenance and upkeep of all Zoo facilities, includes buildings, grounds, lighting, walkways, fencing and infrastructure.   


  1. High school diploma and/or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  2. Two years experience in the area of maintenance operations.
  3. MUST be HVAC certified
  4. Knowledge of the operation, use, fuel requirement and maintenance of tools, and other power equipment used in maintenance.
  5. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  6. Valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
  7. Majority of work performed outdoors in all types of weather.
  8. Work requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting throughout the day.

May require lifting in excess of 50 lbs.

Animal Care Department


There is an immediate opening on our Animal Care team. The hourly rate is based on experience, and benefits are available after probationary period. 

This is a highly visible, full-time, entry-level position caring for the animals and their facilities in selected areas of the zoo. It involves skilled work with a varied animal collection, and the maintenance and sanitary conditions of their buildings, grounds and enclosures. Work is performed in accordance to a schedule, under the direction of a lead keeper. 


  • Knowledge of and ability to feed and care for various animals. Prior animal care experience preferred, prior zoo experience a plus.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with the general public, including large groups of children.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs, work outdoors in all types of weather, and do above average amount of walking.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to learn how to use and handle tools and equipment needed daily to care for animals and their living spaces.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

Education Programs Service Member

Full time AmeriCorps member position with the Jackson Zoo Education Department under the supervision of the Education Curator. 12 month term of service. Serve the local community teaching programs, on and off grounds, to the economically disadvantaged youth population.  Design, lead, and evaluate these programs.  Assist with public events related to educational programming as necessary and provide daily animal care for program animals as it relates to educational programming.

  • Program benefits include a living allowance of $12,530 (~ $482 biweekly). Healthcare, training opportunities, loan forbearance, and some travel reimbursement. An education award of $5,815 upon completion of service that can be used for college tuition, federal loan repayment, or passed to family members (if applicable). Family membership to the Jackson Zoo with all associated benefits and employee rate on all purchases, education programs, and rentals.



Part Time Education Instructor

The Jackson Zoo is looking to hire new instructors for our fun and educational Zoo programs. Instructors teach various education programs, on and off grounds, including but not limited to Zoo Mobiles, Wild Classrooms, and animal encounters. This is a variable-hours position. Weekend work will be required.



There are many areas of the zoo where volunteers are needed: landscaping, facilities, education, special events, and Discovery Zoo. Although most often people think of spring and summer volunteering, there are some opportunities throughout the year. (There are even a few paid internships available for qualified candidates through the MS Department of Employment Security.)
