Global warming is a real and significant threat to the world's animal population.  2004 was the fourth hottest year on record, extending a trend since 1990. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been determined to be the leading cause of global warming. If we continue to emit GHG at the current pace, our earth's temperature is projected to skyrocket by as much as 10° F in the next 100 years, causing deadly animal migrations and extinctions.

If you drive a vehicle that runs on gasoline (or any fossil fuel) you can play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming!  

Cars are an important part of life for most people but they cause pollution and release a great deal of GHG into the air.  Car emissions account for over 25% of all US GHG emissions.

You can offset the effect your driving has on the environment by supporting projects that reduce GHG emissions!

For example, if your vehicle emits 5 tonnes of greenhouse gases, you can purchase 5 tonnes of GHG offsets from Driving Green that come from GHG reduction projects in the United States. Your 5 tonne GHG reduction purchase has the same positive effect in the fight against global warming as implementing technology in your car that would reduce your vehicle’s actual emissions by the same 5 tonnes.  However, implementing the technology in your vehicle is cost prohibitive.  Supporting a project to reduce emissions to match the emissions of your vehicle is affordable.

Jackson Zoo has partnered with DrivingGreen.  DrivingGreen supports internationally approved projects that reduce GHG emissions in the United States and Canada.  These projects are implemented by AgCert, a leading developer of GHG reduction projects worldwide.  (To view an example of an AgCert project, please visit www.agcert.com/process.html.)

Visit DrivingGreen for a simple calculator that will tell you the amount of GHG your own vehicle(s) emits.  You can then purchase GHG offsets through DrivingGreen to make your vehicle “Greenhouse Gas Neutral”.  This also makes a great holiday gift!

In addition to supporting GHG reduction projects, a percentage of your offset purchase will go to support Jackson Zoo-sponsored conservation projects (be sure “Jackson” is entered in the Affiliate Code box at checkout). In return for helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions we will send you a window decal, a license plate holder and a DrivingGreen t-shirt so others will know that your vehicle is “Greenhouse Gas Neutral”!
