Klassroom Keys

Klassroom Keys has been renovated to better serve you!  New this year, these programs are fun, activity filled sessions that focus on content specific to Mississippi Department of Education Frameworks.  These hour long programs take place in the Zoo’s Education Center and provide a hands-on approach to learning about animals and ecosystems.  Here students will play games, interact with biofacts and might even meet a live animal up close!  Class size is limited to 30 students; however, we can present these programs back to back to cycle larger groups through.

Topics

Feathers, Fur & Scales (suitable for 1st – 3rd grade students)

This is a great program to introduce students to the animal world.  Here students will learn about mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and find out how they are different from each other.  They will visit stations where they complete simple activities that illustrate the differences between animals and celebrate their unique features.  Finally they will meet an animal up close!  Will he be furry, feathery, scaly or smooth?  It’s a surprise!

Healthy Habitats (suitable for 3rd – 5th grade students)

How can we tell if a habitat is healthy?  During this program, your students will learn what makes a habitat a healthy place for plants and animals.  They will play a food chain game, learn about habitats around the world, and find out how to make sure the habitat in their own backyard stays healthy.  They will design and write a postcard from their favorite habitat and they might even meet a live animal representative from one of the habitats they’ve studied.

Mississippi Conservation Conversations  (suitable for middle and high school students)

The conservation of our natural resources has recently become a big subject in the news.  Have your kids join the discussion!  Students will learn how energy flows from organism to organism and will understand how human action can either ruin or rescue an ecosystem from collapse.  Students will work in small groups to discuss watershed runoff, an issue that negatively affects Mississippi waterways.  They will brainstorm ways that they can take action for watershed conservation and learn how to sway others to take action too.  They might even meet an animal affected by the health of Mississippi’s waterways!
