Positions Available:

Rides Supervisor

Summary:  Operates and supervises the operation and care of all rides at the Zoo (includes miniature train, carousel and splash pad). Fill in work in horticultural duties and maintenance duties during non-peak visitation months.  Weekend work is required and some evening hours.  Provides a high standard of customer service to guests.

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

High school graduate and a minimum of two years previous ride or amusement passenger experience preferred. Current MS Driver’s license required.  Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work, must be able to drive and remain on feet for period of time. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and the public. Knowledge of small engines and filter systems a plus.

Responsibilities

Trains and supervises all ride employees, does schedule for same.  Runs miniature train and/or carousel during peak and non-peak season.

Ensures the safe and efficient operation of the rides at the zoo.  Ensures the safe operation of the splash pad area.

Prepares daily, monthly and yearly reports; including daily logs and maintain checklists, and all P.O.s for work and/or parts.  Record of gas and chemical purchases.

Services rides as necessary- includes fueling, checking fluid levels, lubricants, etc-, does all scheduled maintenance.  Does full safety checks of rides on an established schedule.  Maintains log system of filter operations of splash pad.

Provides assistance to horticulturalist and/or maintenance departments on an as need bases in non-peak times.

Maintains train, carousel, and splash pad in neat, clean condition.  Maintains cleanliness of grounds around rides and maintains a neat work area.  Follows guidelines of all outside contractual arrangements for rides.

Reports problems regarding rides or visitors to the proper authority. Performs other related duties as required

ZOOKEEPER

The Jackson Zoo is seeking qualified applicants for a keeper position opening.  Keepers are responsible for the daily husbandry, exhibit upkeep, environmental enrichment and ongoing conditioning of a diverse collection of animals. Individual must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and work in all weather conditions. The Jackson Zoo is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team as full time and part-time Guest Services Staff Members

FT and PT positions available, these are hourly, seasonal, non-exempt positions.  Most PT hours are Saturdays and Sundays.  Responsible for exciting, engaging, and entertaining guests in a way that promotes a positive Zoo experience. This position will be cross-trained in three Guest Services roles - Cashier, Gift Shop Attendant, and Membership.  The successful candidates will interact with guests in a friendly, professional, and informed manner that provides guests with information on all aspects of the Zoo experience.  This person will be primarily responsible for receiving and verifying accurate distribution of opening cash, performing accurate and efficient monetary transactions and maintain precise daily records, and reconciling daily transactions at check out including all cash, charges, and discounts. Other responsibilities include sale, monitor and validate memberships of guests at the Zoo’s main entrance.

Wage Range:  $7.75 to $9.25 an hour

QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR REQUIREMENTS

At least three months previous customer service experience preferably in a retail setting

Must be able to stand and remain active for an eight hour shift

Other hospitality and/or sales experience highly preferred

Previous cash-handling experience including processing of all forms of payment a plus

Friendly, outgoing demeanor towards guests and coworkers

Clear, professional communication and speech skills

Ability to remain positive and calm when under pressure;

Able to work efficiently, accurately and quickly in a fast-paced, high-demand environment

Flexible availability as schedule rotates and includes days, special events, weekends and holidays

Summer Camp Internship (un-paid)

Description:  Lead week long summer camps for children ages 4-12 using a set curriculum and education animals within the Jackson Zoo.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Instruct children about wildlife conservation using set curriculum both in a classroom and on zoo grounds
  • Properly handle  live animals and artifacts in our education department
  • Set up and clean up of camp classroom
  • Teach full and half day camp

Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach children ages 4 - 12
  • Teaching experience is a plus
  • Background in animal and wildlife sciences
  • Passionate about wildlife
  • Friendly, outgoing and excellent communication skills
  • Must be a team player and able to instruct alone and/or with others
  • Ability to walk 2 miles, stand for long periods of time and carry 30 pounds.

 

Guidelines:

  • Available to teach camps June 3rd – July 12th, 2013
  • Available to attend training on May 28th and May 29th
  • Work Monday – Friday 8:00 – 4:30
  • Minimum 6 ½ week commitment with weekends off
