The Society is the non-profit entity which operates the Jackson Zoo. Formed in January 2007 from the merger of the former Jackson Zoological Park, Inc. (JZP) and the Friends of the Jackson Zoo (FOTJZ) the society serves to provide visitors with a quality recreational and educational environment dedicated to wildlife care and conservation. Activities of the Society include enhancing the awareness of the Zoo through special events, fund-raisers and membership programs.
Fundraisers assist with capital improvements at the Zoo. Over the past 25 years, these fundraisers have helped fund the Discovery Zoo, the Elephant House Cafe, the Jackson Zoo Trading Co., the quarantine facility at the animal hospital and the move of the elephants to their present quarters. Membership in the Society helps to fund the Zoo's education department's programming, marketing programming, graphics, animal care, and maintenance needs.
The number of directors of the Society is up to 16 dedicated individuals, seven of whom are appointed by the City of Jackson, and the Director of the City of Jackson's Department of Parks and Recreation, who serves as the City's staff representative. Each Director serves a three year term and may be re-elected to an additional three year term in succession. There are over 4000 current members in the Jackson Zoological Society.
Members (referred to as Friends of the Zoo) have access also to a reciprocal program that allows its members free or discounted admission to over 100 other participating zoo across the United States, including Zoo Atlanta, the Birmingham Zoo and the Memphis Zoo.
Anyone interested in volunteering or joining Friends of the Jackson Zoo may call 352-2580 ext. 226 for more information.
