The Jackson Zoo signed a historic partnership agreement with Jackson State University in November 2014, the agreement formalized a three-year commitment and $120,000 pledge from the University to adopt the Sumatran tiger exhibit, which will be renamed The Jackson State University Tiger Exhibit.
The base of the agreement is centralized around the adoption of the tiger exhibit and creation of a JSU membership program, which will go into effect January 1, 2015. This agreement creates endless opportunities for both institutions. In the future, we can look forward to a tiger-cam that will feature live footage from the exhibit, educational kiosks near the tiger exhibit to advance learning opportunities about the Sumatran tiger and JSU co-branded merchandise in the Jackson Zoo Trading Company.
JSU Tiger Exhibit
The adoption of the JSU Tiger Exhibit is monumental for the animals and the community. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, with less than 400 individuals remaining in the wild. The Jackson Zoo provides refuge for three Sumatran tigers: one adult male, Emerson, one adult female, Sari, and their son, Eko. The Sumatran tigers are part of a Species Survival Plan at the zoo and are also the main focus for global conservation efforts. JSU’s support enhances education, conservation and quality of animal care for this rare and beautiful species.

The membership program offers annual memberships to the Jackson Zoo at a discounted rate for active JSU members (Up to 80% off!). Verification of active enrollment, employment, and alumni will be checked before a JSU/Jackson Zoo membership is purchased.
