“Why is the giraffe not in the grass?”
Despite the numerous ideas and CONSTANT efforts of our animal care staff, Kevin Davis Knox (“Knox”) refuses to leave his brick pad and go into the grassy area. He will step out with one or two feet, but never any further.
Giraffes are not really known for leaping or jumping, and apparently the even slight drop from the pad to the ground is too much for our tall boy. We are always researching new ways or techniques to help him “step outside the box.”
You may also notice him “chewing” on the fenceline. He’s done that ever since he was very young and massaging his gums when teething. The keepers feel it has simply become a habit for him.
