Professional Zookeeper (Specialty: Primates)
The Jackson Zoo Animal Care team is currently looking for a full time animal care specialist, with a focus on working with our chimps and gibbons. Caring for these particular animals requires an individual that is extremely detail oriented, able to adhere to strict safety protocols, and is generally unaffected by high noise levels and/or behavioral volatility. This is a very physical position that requires weekends and holidays, teamwork, and a strong background in the biological sciences and animal care. Keepers are responsible for daily animal care (diet preparation and feeding, exhibit and night house cleaning), plus general upkeep of exhibit with the respect to the needs of the animal, as well as interaction with the general public in an educational capacity as needed. They are also highly encouraged to remain abreast of current accredited care protocols and the latest research from reputable educational facilities while taking direction from Animal Care supervisory staff. Keepers must be able to lift 50 lbs or more, be on their feet for extended periods of time, and work various equipment during the day. The competitive hourly wage depends on experience level (previous zoo work a plus). Bachelors degree preferred, but all applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
The City of Jackson, Jackson Zoo is an equal opportunity employer.
