Huge thanks to Tyson Foods for another donation of frozen chicken! Tyson has been supporting the zoo and zoo staff for many years from animal diets (especially the American Alligators) to event support, and we value their ongoing partnership.

Now that the gator family has awoken from their winter lethargy, the 2,000 lbs of frozen leg quarters will be served regularly in addition to their alligator chow* and other enrichment. Keep an eye on our social media pages for the next scheduled public feeding. *Yes, alligator chow is a real thing. So is bear chow, chimp chow, bird chow, tiger chow, rhino chow and just about any other chow you can imagine.

JZ Staff was delighted to receive a hand-written letter and some one-of-a-kind artwork for giraffe Kevin Davis Knox recently. Six-year-old Zara from Redlands, California, wanted Knox to know that she loves giraffes “to the moon and never stop,” and had also contacted giraffes “in the desert and in Minnesota.” JZKeeper Alexandra worked with Knox to gather some of HIS favorite things (mud and willow), which was then laminated and sent with a Keeper Note to the (hopefully) future giraffe keeper.

Speaking of ZooKeepers, we are still looking to fill one or two positions in Animal Care. Zookeeping is not easy, but extremely rewarding, and we are willing to train the right candidates for these competitive positions. These roles are full time, and all applicants need to be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

For any police, firefighters, or military personnel looking for part-time work, our Security ranger position might be just the right fit. Check out the job descriptions and application process on our Job Postings page. Feel free to forward the information to friends and family in the local area.

More thanks going out to Mark & Holly Weber for making another visit to the JZKeeper Amazon Wishlist! From the wheel for the Discovery hedgehogs to a climbing net for the Red-ruffed lemurs, the wish list is made up of items that are not specifically required for animal care, but help JZKeepers provide additional activities for animals and faster cleaning in exhibits.

Our Veterinary Clinic is in need of a gently used washing machine and a gently used full-sized refrigerator or a small stand-alone freezer. Please reply to this email or contact EJ at 601-352-2580 ext 227 if you know of someone wanting to donate gently used appliances to our vet hospital.

THANK YOU for continuing to wear masks to protect our staff and animals!

Why it is important to remain masked in public until all eligible humans are vaccinated.
