Belhaven University Volunteers

Big Thanks going out to the incoming freshmen at Belhaven University for donating a Saturday morning to our zoo staff!
About 20 students will be out in August to help clean and paint some zoo fixtures at the Entrance and in the Mississippi Area. They are also going to donate some supplies for the project, and we couldn’t be more thankful! We have a small staff and limited resources, so these projects can really make a huge difference to our daily work load!

The next two projects are larger, and will probably take more time. Director Dave needs adults and young adults that can clean and re-perch inside animal exhibits, and we also need to tackle the Asian Gardens, which is a lot of weeding, trimming, and cleaning out the two fountains. Go to the VOLUNTEER PAGE for more info and a sign up sheet.

ZooKeeper Positions Open

We currently have two vacant keeper positions that need to be filled. If you love animals, like people, are 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED, and are active and detail-oriented, we would love to talk to you about becoming a part of our dedicated animal care staff!

How do we keep animals active and engaged? It’s called enrichment and it’s one of the most important parts of animal care. To help our hardworking keepers, we put up the JZKeeper Support page, where keeper fans can purchase and donate directly from the JZ Keeper Amazon Wish List, or send digital gift cards through GiftCard.com or Amazon, that donate towards the cost of certain specific items for the animals or keeper care needs. (Any questions can be directed to JZKeepers, or by calling 769-246-7747.)

MASKS ARE REQUIRED INSIDE BUILDINGS & NEAR ENCLOSURES

We are asking all guests to bring masks with them when they visit due to the upsurge in COVID cases and the slow rate of vaccinations. The Backyard Creatures building and the Gift Shop will remain open, but each is limited to 10 people inside at one time, and they MUST BE WEARING MASKS. Once outdoors, guests can drop their masks as long as they remain socially distanced from other guests, staff, and animal enclosures.

Thank you for helping to keep our animals, staff and guests healthy!
